Kathryn Gage grew up in Columbus, Georgia and as a child was obsessed with the work of children’s book illustrator Joan Walsh Anglund. She declared early on that she would pursue art as a career and began taking watercolor painting lessons in junior high. She continued art lessons throughout high school and received a BFA from Auburn University with a focus in graphic design and illustration. Upon graduation, Kathryn went to work as a Creative Director in Birmingham but began painting in her free time and selling her work through galleries and commissions. While raising children, she switched her focus and created a children’s clothing line which utilized her own illustrations. She operated this business for more than ten years but has returned to painting recently.
Now living and working in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Kathryn’s work references her graphic design background in composition and color while utilizing an illustrative style. She primarily paints female figures, often with a vintage twist, with the hope that her work will speak to people in a way that reminds them of themselves or someone they love.
