In the Chinoiserie tradition, the garden was never a place. It was a feeling, a carefully constructed vision of China's natural world, filtered through centuries of Sino-European decorative exchange and rendered onto silk, porcelain, and architectural interiors with a precision that had everything to do with longing and nothing to do with accuracy. Here, two Asian swallowtail butterflies drift among flowering branches in a soft Famille Rose palette, the blush of a peony at first light, the warmth of aged gold silk.
