Marcie Woodard

Marcie Woodard is a sinologist and artist, and the founder of Qidie Studio, a Birmingham-based practice devoted to hand-painted Chinoiserie. Working primarily in silk using gouache and Chinese watercolor, she creates original diptychs that draw on the centuries-long European tradition of reimagining Chinese aesthetics, a dialogue between East and West with roots in the 18th century. Her practice is grounded in a scholarly background in Sinology, with studies at Peking University, China and the University of Würzburg, Germany, yet her work is defined above all by its handmade intimacy: botanical motifs, gilded silhouettes, and the quiet luxury of the painted panel.
